Despite international travel for The Rubenstein-Bing Student-Athlete Civic Engagement Program (ACE) being canceled for the summer of 2020, the ACE Program launched ACE in Place beginning Tuesday, June 23.

ACE in Place is a five-week online engagement experience running from June 23 – July 23 that builds on the program values in context of current events in the world.

“Five years ago, ACE launched with the goal of bringing Duke and Stanford student-athletes together to engage in meaningful service experiences,” ACE Program Director Emily Durham said. “This summer we are continuing to innovate and offer unique programming for our ACE community that builds on our program values and meets the current moment – an unprecedented time of critical social change and social distancing.”

Participation in this program is voluntary and will not impact the student-athlete’s eligibility for ACE 2021 programming. ACE in Place features 35 student-athletes from Duke and Stanford from 28 total varsity sports who were originally accepted in the four programs – ACE in South Africa, ACE in Vietnam, ACE in Peru and ACE in Thailand.

The experience features three weekly components including a Zoom skills building activity, a Zoom ACE community building discussion and an optional self-directed community engagement.

In the skills building sessions, participants will explore a different theme that encompasses ACE values and current events while the community building conversations will offer an opportunity to discuss weekly themes, share about self-directed community engagement projects and participate in team building activities.

The community building aspect will be run by ACE Ambassadors, former ACE participants, which will present the opportunity to build relationships among Duke and Stanford peers.

Participants who opt into the self-directed community engagement can pursue something within their home community, or with an organization a participant has previously supported at Duke or Stanford.
