Selection Criteria
The ACE Program employs a holistic approach in evaluating applicants, considering multiple criteria to create diverse and cohesive program teams. This includes ensuring representation from a variety of athletic teams on each program.
After reviewing each application based on the criteria and characteristics below, the selection committee invites selected applicants to attend an in-person, on-campus interview. (Note: Not all applicants will be invited, depending on application numbers.) After interviews, the selection committee uses the criteria below to evaluate the applicants’ materials (written application, interview feedback, and coach’s endorsement) to build program teams and select up to 36 Duke student-athletes, plus alternates.
ACE seeks candidates who demonstrate the following:
- Commitment to Public Service and Civic Engagement: Demonstrated through past (including high school), current, or future involvement in community engagement activities.
- Relevant Background and Experience: Demonstrated through past (including high school) work and volunteer experience; athletic involvement; personal interests; and/or campus organizations, activities and coursework.
- Connection Between ACE and Personal, Professional, Athletic, and/or Academic Goals: Explanation of how ACE aligns with current or future personal, professional, athletic, and/or academic goals, including how it offers a unique opportunity to have an immersive, global experience— especially for student-athletes who would not otherwise have these opportunities during their undergraduate experience.
- Commitment to Positive Group Dynamic and Team Culture: Demonstrated commitment to actively contribute to a positive group program/team experience.
- Supportive Coach’s Endorsement: Demonstrated maturity, humility, open-mindedness, and a willingness to learn outside their comfort zone as part of the team. Positive contributor to team culture.
