Megan Maransky

Megan Maransky is currently a junior on the Duke Field Hockey team from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She participated in the ACE in South Africa program in the summer of 2023. She worked with eleven other student-athletes from Duke and Stanford to collaborate with teachers at local Early Childhood Development Centers to brainstorm new methods of teaching English as a second language, as well as helped organize and plan a sports camp for teenage boys in local townships. She also learned a lot about the rich history and culture of South Africa in enrichment activities, such as visiting museums, participating in traditional cooking classes, and exploring Cape Town.

Gandoca is a small, rural, coastal community of about 600 residents. The town has two elementary schools and a small high school. It is not developed touristically like its neighboring towns of Puerto Viejo and Manzanillo and maintains a rural, community feel. This is the small store where participants can buy ice cream, sodas, and snacks in the local community.
