Daniel Karlin is a junior on the Football Team at Duke. He is from Providence, RI and is an Economics major. He participated in ACE in Vietnam in 2019 where he taught basketball, math, and life skills to 6th and 7th graders. Although this experience was a challenging one at times, it was his favorite experience at Duke and one he will remember for the rest of his life, as the lessons learned and friendships created will stay with him. Michaela is a junior on the Cross Country and Track teams at Duke. She is studying Chemistry and Public Policy, and hopes to be a physician someday. She went on the ACE in Vietnam trip (teaching biology and soccer) in 2019 and formed lifetime friends with the Vietnamese coaches, as well as relationships that she will remember forever with the kids there. The trip impacted her a great deal, and she is passionate about sharing this with other students who are considering traveling with ACE. Josh Romine is a junior on the Cross Country and Track Team at Duke. He is majoring in Computer Science and minoring in Psychology. ACE in China provided an incredible opportunity for Josh to help serve the community in Shangri-La, while exploring the diverse cultures in China. Mike Ungvarsky is a junior on the Duke Cross Country and Track and Field Team. He is majoring in Public Policy and completing a Markets & Management Certificate. The South Africa program was the perfect opportunity for Mike to experience another culture and engage in service. Peyton is a junior on the softball team at Duke. She is a native of Richmond, VA majoring in Psychology with the hope to pursue a career in business or athletics after college. She wants to be able to have an effect on student-athletes like people have had an effect on her in her time at Duke. She participated in the 2019 ACE in Vietnam program where she taught English and baseball to 6th and 7th-grade students. While in Vietnam, Peyton enjoyed having the opportunity to introduce a sport she is passionate about to Vietnamese kids and watch them develop their skills and competitiveness over the course of 3 weeks. Building life-long relationships with Stanford student-athletes and Vietnamese college students was an experience that will always be extremely valuable to Peyton. Carly Perri is a junior on the Duke Swimming and Diving Team and participated in the 2019 ACE in Peru program. Carly is pursuing a double major in Cultural Anthropology and International Comparative Studies (ICS) with a minor in Psychology. Within her ICS major, she is pursuing a regional focus in Latin America and the Caribbean and when the ACE in Peru program was offered for the first time, she knew she could not pass such an opportunity. The program allowed Carly to expand on her Spanish speaking skills while learning about ethical volunteering, responsible tourism, and cultural sensitivity, all important aspects that will apply to her own career in civic engagement one day. Carly is excited to apply the many things she learned in Peru to her future projects within her academic and career pathways while also encouraging future teammates and Duke student-athletes to have the amazing opportunity of experiencing ACE. Kate is a sophomore on the women’s rowing team. She is undecided between Human Biology, Psychology or a combination of both, but hopes to combine her passion for helping people with a medical related career. One of her life goals is to maintain a broad perspective of the world. ACE in China provided an amazing opportunity to continue to do this through service learning, meeting new people and experiencing a new culture.
