Michaela is a junior on the Stanford Women’s Tennis Team and is majoring in Science, Technology, and Society with a minor in International Relations. Her passion for learning about new cultures as well as her interest in pursuing international service work led her to apply to the ACE program, where she made unforgettable memories serving in the Zola township with her fellow Duke and Stanford student-athletes. She especially loved working with women within the township and seeing their passion for learning shine in computer classes and first aid training. Isabella Duan is a junior on the Light-Weight Rowing Team. She is majoring in Human Biology and pursuing a career in medicine. After running an English and sports summer camp in Shangri-La, China, she returned to campus to lead an after-school erging program that unites middle school students behind an appreciation for physical activity and teamwork. Additionally, her experiences abroad have inspired her to inform the Stanford community about global health opportunities and challenges through her role as the Community Chair of the Global Health Student Council. In her everyday life, she continues to integrate what she learned two summers ago about her athletic, racial, and cultural identity and the importance of self-love and vulnerability. Her goal this year as an ACE ambassador is to strengthen the relationships between ACE participants from past to present to future and from Asia to Africa to South America! Daniel Karlin is a junior on the Football Team at Duke. He is from Providence, RI and is an Economics major. He participated in ACE in Vietnam in 2019 where he taught basketball, math, and life skills to 6th and 7th graders. Although this experience was a challenging one at times, it was his favorite experience at Duke and one he will remember for the rest of his life, as the lessons learned and friendships created will stay with him. Michaela is a junior on the Cross Country and Track teams at Duke. She is studying Chemistry and Public Policy, and hopes to be a physician someday. She went on the ACE in Vietnam trip (teaching biology and soccer) in 2019 and formed lifetime friends with the Vietnamese coaches, as well as relationships that she will remember forever with the kids there. The trip impacted her a great deal, and she is passionate about sharing this with other students who are considering traveling with ACE. Josh Romine is a junior on the Cross Country and Track Team at Duke. He is majoring in Computer Science and minoring in Psychology. ACE in China provided an incredible opportunity for Josh to help serve the community in Shangri-La, while exploring the diverse cultures in China. Mike Ungvarsky is a junior on the Duke Cross Country and Track and Field Team. He is majoring in Public Policy and completing a Markets & Management Certificate. The South Africa program was the perfect opportunity for Mike to experience another culture and engage in service. Working for an NGO focused on sustainable development provided Mike experience that aligns with his academic and career interests.
