“The opportunity to go a beautiful place, with such a unique history and do meaningful service work that will impact the lives of young kids was one that I could not pass up. Unlike anything else, the ACE program in South Africa seemed like the perfect way to help those who are in need, and come in contact with people and a culture that is so rich and different from mine.”

As part of the Duke in South Africa program, Mariah will assist with basic healthcare initiatives, activity-based education and teaching, light construction, and sports programs in the community of Nomzamo township near Cape Town.

Mariah’s past experiences with service includes membership in the Stanford Gospel Choir, Black Pre-Law Society, the Black Orientation and Recruitment Committee, and the “Big Sib/Lil Sib” mentorship program. She has also volunteered with Cardinal for Community (C4C) and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. With her team, Mariah has volunteered at many community service events, primarily focused on providing local children opportunities for athletic activity.
