As a global health and economics double major, participating in ACE in South Africa is valuable to me because the emphasis on cultural awareness and sustainability directly relates to my professional and academic aspirations. This program has the ability to positively impact so many young lives, and I hope to be part of that change, even if in a small way. I am most excited to learn about the South African culture and cultivate lasting connections with other Duke athletes and local community members.
Vaya’s past experiences with volunteering and community engagement include working with patients at the Charlottesville Free Clinic, serving as the treasurer of the Duke Athletics Asian Network (AAN), volunteering at Camp Holiday Trails (a summer camp for children with medical needs), and representing Duke Rowing on the ACC student-athlete sport-specific advisory committee.
