As I reflect on my time in Costa Rica, I’m flooded with vivid memories—snakes, enormous bugs, team games, a grueling six-hour hike, and so much more. When I boarded the plane on June 14th, I was filled with apprehension. I had no idea I was about to embark on one of the most fulfilling experiences of my life.
I certainly didn’t expect to form deep friendships or discover a newfound appreciation for living in the moment—but that’s exactly what happened. My daily routine at home is often packed with classes, practices, and the constant rhythm of busy life. This trip pulled me out of that cycle. It helped me realize that I’d been viewing the world through a narrow lens—one shaped by personal goals and the comforts of routine.
In Costa Rica, I stepped into a community that lacked many of the conveniences I’ve always taken for granted. Yet, what I found was not emptiness, but joy. I saw how people could lead fulfilling, connected lives without constant access to technology or material possessions. That perspective shift grounded me. I’ve become more present, more appreciative, and more attuned to life’s simple, beautiful moments.
One of my most meaningful experiences came on the day we taught the children how to play volleyball. After running them through the basics and practicing for a bit, we began to scrimmage. I noticed that the smallest child in the group was struggling to keep up with the older kids. Despite her size, she gave it her all. What stood out most was her determination and love for the game—something I saw in nearly every child we met. To them, sports weren’t just games. They were an escape, a source of joy, and a powerful way to connect.
Eventually, she approached me and quietly asked if we could do gymnastics instead—her favorite. I was honored that she trusted me enough to share that. We spent the rest of our time together doing cartwheels, headstands, and even flips. It was a simple but profound moment.
Through sports—through movement—we built a connection that went far beyond language or background.
That day, I witnessed firsthand how something as universal as play can bridge cultures and build lasting bonds. I’m incredibly proud of the impact we had on the children of Gandoca. I hope that in some small way, our presence helped empower them and sparked confidence they can carry with them into the future.
For me, ACE Costa Rica was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience—one I’ll always treasure. The friendships I formed, with both my teammates and the local community, are unlike anything I’ve experienced before. These relationships weren’t built on social media or screens. They were formed through laughter, adventure, and the authenticity of shared experience. I honestly don’t think I would’ve gotten to know this incredible group of people so well if we hadn’t stepped outside our everyday lives together.
We played board games, talked for hours, and faced challenges that brought us closer. These are the moments that will stay with me. The Costa Rican phrase “Pura Vida”—which means “pure life”—is more than just a saying. It’s a mindset. A way of embracing simplicity, presence, and joy. It’s a lesson I’ll carry with me always. Moving forward, I want to live with more intention—to be more observant, more grateful, and most of all, more committed to living fully in the moment.
